Arriate station and Ronda loop would go
Officials of ADIF, the railway infrastructure company, have met in Madrid with the mayor of Ronda, Antonio Marín, and members of his government team to brief them on the study on the new line between the town of the Tajo and Antequera.
The current rail connection is 88 kilometres long but this will be reduced to 70 kilometres for the new high speed AVE route that could see trains travelling at 300 kms an hour. Antequera-Bobadilla will be the hub which will send trains from Madrid to Ronda, Granada and Sevilla.
No new route for the railway line has yet been finalised but the study proposes that a new track would be laid from Antequera-Bobadilla to Almargen. From there to Setenil de las Bodegas it would follow the existing route. However a new track would be laid from Setenil to La Indiana in Ronda. It would completely by-pass Ronda and Arriate – indeed following a valley to the west from Setenil - before joining again the existing line at La Indiana station.
La Indiana would in future become the main Ronda station with new buildings and infrastructure constructed on the site of the current rarely used platforms. The new line would be electrified with two tracks – one international gauge the other mainly for freight traffic. However the new infrastructure would benefit the Algeciras to Granada local service as the trains would be able to travel faster along the new route.
Although money is currently being spent on laying a double track on the loop line from Ronda to La Indiana via Arriate this would in time disappear with the arrival of the new AVE link. It is intended that the passenger service would then use the new, speedier line and hence no trains would pass through Arriate or the centre of Ronda.

However the PP opposition points to the town’s 35 per cent rise.
