ADIF PRESENTS STUDY ON NEW ANTEQUERA TO RONDA AVE LINE

Arriate station and Ronda loop would go

Officials of ADIF, the railway infrastructure company, have met in Madrid with the mayor of Ronda, Antonio Marín, and members of his government team to brief them on the study on the new line between the town of the Tajo and Antequera.

The current rail connection is 88 kilometres long but this will be reduced to 70 kilometres for the new high speed AVE route that could see trains travelling at 300 kms an hour. Antequera-Bobadilla will be the hub which will send trains from Madrid to Ronda, Granada and Sevilla.

No new route for the railway line has yet been finalised but the study proposes that a new track would be laid from Antequera-Bobadilla to Almargen. From there to Setenil de las Bodegas it would follow the existing route. However a new track would be laid from Setenil to La Indiana in Ronda. It would completely by-pass Ronda and Arriate – indeed following a valley to the west from Setenil - before joining again the existing line at La Indiana station.

La Indiana would in future become the main Ronda station with new buildings and infrastructure constructed on the site of the current rarely used platforms. The new line would be electrified with two tracks – one international gauge the other mainly for freight traffic. However the new infrastructure would benefit the Algeciras to Granada local service as the trains would be able to travel faster along the new route.

Although money is currently being spent on laying a double track on the loop line from Ronda to La Indiana via Arriate this would in time disappear with the arrival of the new AVE link. It is intended that the passenger service would then use the new, speedier line and hence no trains would pass through Arriate or the centre of Ronda.

BIG PAYOUT
The Diputación de Málaga is investing 10 million euros in the 25 municipalities in the Serranía de Ronda including the Genal-Guadriaro consortium of town halls in 2010. The money is to boost economic development in each of the municipalities in these times of crisis. The funding accounts for 22 per cent of all the investment by the authority in Málaga province next year.

SECOND LOWEST
Ministry of Employment and Social Security data says Ronda has seen a 7.6 per cent rise in unemployment. Ronda’s councillor for employment, Pepi Valle, said this means the municipality had the second lowest rise in the province putting Ronda just behind Torremolinos on 7 per cent amongst municipalities over 20,000 residents. However the PP opposition points to the town’s 35 per cent rise.

PA REVIVAL
The Partido Andalucista can trace its roots to Ronda which has always been an important symbol. The town was governed by a PA mayor but he and his fellow councillors abandoned the party and joined PSOE leaving the PA in crisis. Now Daniel Harillo has been elected secretary general pledging the party will field a full list of candidates at the next local elections.

SOUL TIME
Ronda has a new slogan to attract tourists to the town of the Tajo. The theme is ‘El Alma de Andalucía’ – the soul of Andalucía. It was presented along with the accompanying logo at the Convento de Santo Domingo by the councillor for tourism, Maribel Morales. It ties-in Ronda’s place at the heart of bullfighting, wine production, its history and stunning scenery.

MEDICAL CARE
Los Prados, one of the outlying rural communities in the municipality of Ronda, is to have its own health centre serving the needs of the 1,200 residents. Ronda has invested 70,000 euros in creating the health centre and has signed an agreement with the Serranía health authority to ensure a doctor and nurse are on duty on a half-day basis from November 25.

KUKUXUMUSU PARK
A first for Ronda. It now has a children’s park in which the attractions were all designed by KUKUXUMUSU – the company of the famous cartoonist Mikel Urmeneta. The park is located in the plaza Virgen de la Esperanza in the San Cristóbal area. Around 20,000 euros has been invested in the project of which 3,000 was spent on upgrading the plaza itself.

MUSICAL FUNDING
The director of the Obra Social arm of Unicaja, Francisco Faraguna, has signed an accord with Ronda which cedes the building housing the municipal music school to the town hall for 20 years. The school in the San Francisco quarter is owned by the bank and the agreement ensures the future of the school – an important element in the town’s cultural life.
